Maxwell

For my interview, I talked to an administrative assistant at the Maxwell Museum who had been working there for a number of years. The main focus of the conversation was on the rligious aspect of anthropology. What I learned from the interview was:

  • That anthropologgists have a history of incorporating their own world views into their study of  a past independant culture.
  • Controversy at the Museum largely stems form not only this issue but also the issue of handling artifacts sacred to other cultures in the name of research or academia. This includes handling statues of living gods and burial pieces and funeral objects.
By and large it seems that in this case it would be appropriate maybe to do a piece centering aroud the intersection of understanding and blending of ideas and cultures. My last art project consisted of religion and science coexisting as a form of thinking outside of the box. This one might included more symbolism of the background of both and its roots to land and culture.
