Title: Educate to Liberate Location: Just in front of Zimmerman Library The use of text and the notion of education revert back to its location in front of the Zimmerman Library. The location of the Plaza adjacent to the platform of the Zimmerman Library, and the metaphor of the "plaza" as a meet and greet area, a social gathering place, and a public space, seek to create a welcoming dialogue about the piece itself. Written over the piece are symbols, words and graphics that of a peaceful and united world, a world that can only be realized through education. But not necessarily the education taught in a classroom, rather, education with our community in a public place. I chose a library setting for its connection to individual education through books and ones individual curiosity. Likewise, I reference the plaza and its connection to community gathering/social public sphere, to bring awareness to the public dialogue as a use for gathering knowledge and information; learning through communication with our peers and community. Both are necessary components to an unbiased and well-rounded education. And with that kind of education "liberation" in terms of peace and social justice, can be better realized in our modern world.
This was a great concept, and the connection to the library was well thought out. I think the construction was ambitious, and it could have stood up better if you had more time to build it. Making it inflatable, for example. But as a concept it is strong. Having the words form a loop makes it interesting from all sides. The symbols and text can get busy, visually. I think diversity would still come through if you left it blank. Or you could focus on a particular issue and make the design more focused on those symbols.
