The theme of the booth was oriented around stress and the booth itself functioned as a destressor.  Whether it be by actively engaging in the therapeutic process of art or by enjoying the contents of the carefully crafted care packages, people were encouraged to enjoy the contents of our booth.  At the booth we had and exuberant amount of sidewalk chalk, acrylic paint, colored tissue paper, glitter, scissors, and construction paper.  They were all free and all available for anyone willing to participate.  Many people came and went as their schedules allowed, but by closing time it was evident by the chaos of color in our little corner of the plaza that something big definitely had gone down.  Even we, tempted by the ample amount of supplies before us, engaged in a little painting and sidewalk chalk use.

Our goals: destress at a time of high stress, encourage student involvement/interaction, reduce stress in a healthy and creative way...were all met.  And because of that, and the fun that we all had while doing it, I would consider out booth a big success

Project Four

My main idea was to increase awareness of potential disaster/emergency preparation. One of my first thoughts was life-sized posters of scenes of something going wrong asking "What would you do?" followed by instructions. Small business card like handouts with instructions on basic responses to hand out would be interesting too. Examples would be along the lines of "if someone is bleeding" or "if you suspect a neck injury."

This was actually inspired by the emergency siren test earlier this term and the lack of awareness surrounding it. My rant with UNM's system would be another issue entirely, however.

Project #4

My goal for this project is to target a wide audience, I want a great deal of people to be touched, moved or to take something from this project.  The ultimate goal is for this project is for people to take something away from it  and for them to impart it in their personal lives.

Us against the World

If I could do anything without any limitations, I would interview people and share their story. Uncut. I don't care if it's a typical story or completely outrageous, I just want to listen and document. From there I would want to pass on the mission for people to interview someone they don't know and document their story. So there's my goal: listen and document.

Project 4

Building on the theme of examining what society finds valuable and drawing from my daily experience living/going to school in Albuquerque, I'd really like my fourth project to deal with the issue of homelessness. I've always thought it was peculiar how insular and removed UNM as an institution seems from Albuquerque as a city (and its problems at such). Additionally, its interesting how well social divisions persist despite the fact that students and the local homeless occupy very much the same spaces, whether around central or even on campus. The goals of this project would be: 1. To get UNM students involved in the welfare of the larger Albuquerque community 2. Opening a dialogue about homelessness, its ethical implications and its possible solutions.

I'd like to do something along the lines of this project done in Chicago in 2009, where volunteers made pinatas stuffed with emergency blankets and placed them in the underpasses where the local homeless typically slept. I really like the idea of anonymous care packages, although I think using non-perishable food and water might be a good variation. I feel the light-hearted shape of the pinatas makes the offer seem more genuine as opposed to out of pity or obligation. I'd like to use a similar light-hearted packaging of some sort, perhaps presents?

final project objectives

In terms of goals, I really want our final project to raise awareness. Personally, I'd like to raise awareness about the environment, but I'm hoping we can think of an issue that is more class-inclusive to what we've done all semester long. I also want to make people think about how their choices affect those around them, in terms of wildlife, the environment and other people. We've all done projects that bring attention to pressing issues in our community. Dorm problems at UNM, sketchy looking bus stops in Albuquerque, the declining bird population in New Mexico and the lack of respect/appreciation for UNM LaPo servers, just to name a few. I think these projects have successfully conveyed their intended messages because of how bold they were, which is why I think we should use moss graffiti in our final project. We'd be able to write messages and make illustrations, and I think that will create more of a statement.

Goooooooooooooaaaaaallllll!!!

When I learned more about stealth art I decided that I wanted my final project to benefit animals.  I recently adopted a dog from a shelter and I saw that many of the animals at the shelter had been there for quite a while.  I feel like if more people were aware that shelter animals are some of the most awesome pets out there they would be more willing to adopt.  I would like to host an event or series of events to showcase the animals that need to be adopted.  I know there are already events like this but I would like to make an even bigger event with more "advertising."  I want a lot of people to know that the event is taking place.  I would like for pet parents who adopted their pets to bring their pets with them to demonstrate that there is nothing wrong with adopting an animal from a shelter.

Final project goals

The goal for my final project is to work with a part of the community that is often ignored. I would like to make them feel as though they know someone still cares. I'm thinking the homeless would be a good group.

Final Project Goal

The goal for my final project is to influence people's lives in a positive manner, even if it is only slightly. I want to make someone feel appreciated.

Project 4

The goal of my stealth art project would be to inspire people to critically look at how they aproach other people. Trying to avoid something dramatic like fake blood or something would be hard. If time or resources wouldn't be an issue I think that I would like to do a series of faceless mime skits or a gogantic mirror that distorts beautiful images but maybe scaled down sketches or something would suffice.

Pay It Forward

My goal for project for is to either inspire a happiness or a willingness to "pay it forward" with an intent to do good for someone or bring them happiness as well.

Project #4

The main goal of what I want to see in project #4 is something that is very hands on and that others can become involved in and contribute to as well. I think it would make the message a lot more effective (whatever the message may be.) I want people to be able to take something away from the project and somehow spread it whether that be taking something physically and spreading it or spreading the message and raising awareness.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Consistently, the goals for my projects have been to:
-use sculpture as a means to change the way we view, taken in and relate to the environment around us.
-place the sculpture in community places like UNM/plaza, dormitories, and parks to optimize the viewing capacity of my pieces while also letting the location say something about/define the piece.
-and use creative, political, and meaningful messages within the works to direct the viewers towards understanding different concepts, ideas, messages in new and creative ways.

It seems only natural that project 4 work within these established goals.
to be continued.........

Spread the Love!

My goal for project #4 is to create a project that will make everyone who sees it want to selflessly help out or give to another person. We need to find a way to display the act of giving and then associate it with the positive emotions we all feel when doing something nice. We need to infect our audience's subconscious with the idea of love!

Community Bus Stop Transformations

Project Proposal:

If I had unlimited resources and didn't have to worry about the logistical issues (like finances) of a public art project, I would transform bus stops throughout Albuquerque through an Adopt-A-Stop style program.

Community activist groups and schools in Albuquerque would be able to submit proposals to the Adopt-A-Spot program featuring their ideas of how to transform or improve bus stops through creative projects. The people on the Adopt-A-Stop program team would then work with the groups to put each project into action.

Projects should feature positive themes such as sustainability, human rights, eating healthy, exercising, etc. Projects with a use value would be greatly appreciated. Some projects with use value might include solar panels or rooftop gardens.

With unlimited resources, these bus stops wouldn't have to only feature two-dimensional posters or drawings. People could completely transform bus stops by replacing and redesigning the structure of the bus stop itself. Each stop would still have to be functional, of course (i.e. with a bench and a shelter to protect from weather), but everything else would be fair game as far as what can be transformed.

The people on the Scottish island of Unst – all 614 of them – take great pride indecorating the stop. It started with a sofa and a table and now has a TV, art and even curtains.

Made by artist Aaron Scales, the bus stop was part of a national design competition. Inspired by discarded trash at the site, Scales went local with his work, constructing the bus stop out of all local Kentucky soft drink Ale-8-One bottles. The bus stop also uses LED lighting to illuminate the glass bottles at night; solar energy is collected during the day and used for the eye-popping nighttime light display.
